New Animals at Hahn Ranch!

Yesterday was an exciting day here at Hahn Ranch: we got three new goats and dozens of laying chicks!

We originally planned to tether the goats to the fench around the property so they could munch our weeds all around the perimeter. Unfortunately, these goats did NOT like being tethered, so they ended up getting tangled pretty quickly. We didn't want them to get injured while we figured out how to pen them in, so we put them in Mom's back yard. The goats LOVED that, and they settled in immediately! Bingo, the farm dog, was incredibly curious about the goats, and the feeling was mutual.

We look forward to seeing the goats around the Ranch, and hopefully they will eat all our thistle and tumbleweeds!

We also got several dozen laying hen chicks. We already have about 15 full-sized hens, so we are slowly introducing these chicks to the harem. We hope to have docile, friendly hens that are happy to peck at the compost and enjoy the big Wyoming skies! Currently we have a few mean hens that peck the other hens' backs quite a bit. We'd like to keep the hen-picking to a minimum, especially with these cute baby chicks. Chicks are particularly vulnerable their first few weeks of life, so we are keeping them isolated, heated, and giving them special food. Hopefully they will grow into healthy and happy laying hens!
